An ambient microphone records everything: the patient snoring, corridor noise, ventilation, and in home polygraphy the person sleeping in the same bed. On review, nothing separates what comes from whom.

The piezoelectric sensor solves the problem mechanically. Fixed to the front of the neck, it picks up vibration transmitted through the tissues. What does not come from the patient does not make it vibrate, so it does not appear.

The signal also serves inspiratory flow limitation, where the presence and shape of snoring help qualify a respiratory event that does not reach the hypopnoea threshold.

Fitting requires degreased skin and a decent adhesive. It is a sensor that comes off easily if the site has not been prepared, especially on bearded patients.

Two references exist in the catalogue: the reusable Spes Medica version and the SleepSense piezo model. They do the same job, the choice comes down to the connector in service and to availability.
