The paediatric cannula is not a shortened adult one. The prongs are shorter and finer, and above all the spacing matches a child nostril. With an adult cannula the prongs sit badly, the relative seal is lost, and the pressure signal becomes unusable exactly when it is most needed.
In paediatrics the pressure channel counts even more than in adults. Paediatric scoring criteria accept shorter events, and the diagnosis often turns on hypopnoeas that only the pressure signal shows cleanly.
Three variants. The 210 cm for the lab, the 60 cm for ambulatory work, and a 210 cm with integrated filter to protect the transducer.
Comfort counts as much as technique. A child who finds the cannula unpleasant takes it off during the night, and then there is no recording at all. Checking position at bedtime and taping the tubing to the cheek with a gentle adhesive changes the proportion of usable nights.
