An EEG cap holds by its elasticity, and its weak point is the back of the head. When the patient sinks into the pillow, the cap rides up a few millimetres, and the occipital positions shift. Over a night, a few millimetres are enough to lift an electrode.
The chin strap anchors the cap under the chin and removes that movement. It is standard in polysomnography and video EEG, and much more occasional on a short study with the patient sitting up.
Three sizes, neonate, paediatric and adult. Size matters: a strap that is too big holds nothing, one that is too small presses under the jaw and ends up being removed by the patient.
It washes with the cap, under the same conditions.
