An effort belt does not fail, it degrades. It stretches, loses its elasticity, and the sensor it carries sees a smaller deformation for the same chest movement. The signal shrinks without ever disappearing, which is the worst case: nobody notices straight away.

The practical rule is simple. A belt you have to tighten more than before to get the same trace is a belt to replace. And a belt used twice a night, every day, does not last the year.

Six lengths cover the whole population. From 45 cm infant to 190 cm large adult, in 2.5 or 3.8 cm width depending on the model. Measuring the chest circumference at fitting avoids over-tightening a belt that is too short, which distorts the signal as much as one that is too loose.

Two are needed per patient, one thoracic and one abdominal. That is obvious to anyone hooking up patients daily, and a regular surprise at ordering time.
